An Unusual Presentation of Floating Thumb

Vakif Mehmet Keskinbicki, Ayse Sencan, Kahraman Ozturk.

Abstract
Thumb hypoplasia has a varying range from slight hypoplasia to total absence. Type IV hypoplasia, also known as floating
thumb, includes two small phalanges attached to the hand with a thin skin bridge containing neurovascular bundle. A fifteen
days old boy had a mass-like floating thumb, unlikely to frequently encountered. The family was advised to seek genetic
counseling for accompanying abnormalities of the baby. Six days later, the baby showed up with the congested thumb. As
an urgent treatment, the congested hypoplastic thumb was amputated under local anesthesia.
