Comment on "Is bio absorbable screw really reliable for midcarpal arthrodesis? A literature review illustrated by a case report"

S. Könneker, P.M. Vogt 1.

Abstract
We agree with the authors to use bioabsorbable materials with caution for arthrodesis. Generally, a fundamental understanding of the main principals of bioabsorbable implants is of enormous importance. In this case report the author argue that the implant failed. However, the findings of a small contact zone between the lunate and hamate might as well indicate remnants of cartilage prohibiting bone healing. Nevertheless, resorbable implants are an interesting innovation with generally good to excellent results when using the right indication. In order to gain more evidence about magnesium-based implants in hand surgery a prospective randomized trial has been set up by the authors of this comment

Key words: bioabsorbable
