Pterygium axillae in association with Poland Syndrome

Abstract
We report the case of a 2-year-old boy with a left-sided axillary pterygium and concomitant Poland’s Syndrome. The Pterygium presented as a deep web extending from the lateral thorax to the lower arm, severely restricting shoulder motion. Following excision of the entire fibrous membrane and multiple Z-plasty release of the skin, shoulder movement was greatly improved. We speculate that the pterygium may represent anlage from the absent pectoralis muscle.
