Abstract
Objectives: This survey was conducted to determine the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on orthopaedic residents and to better understand how it affected their professional and personal experiences.
Methods: A 27-item, web-based anonymous survey was delivered to orthopaedic residents in Turkey and was completed by a total of 138. The responses were evaluated in respect of demographic data, and changes in the education program, physical and mental health related to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Results: The total weekly working time decreased during the pandemic compared to the previous period (p<0.001) including the weekly working time in the emergency room (p<0.001) and outpatient clinic (p=0.001) with the exception in the operating room. The overall total education time was significantly decreased during the pandemic, with a decrease in face-to face educational methods, and an increase in the use of online-based education methods (p<0.001). Of the respondents, 31.9% had contracted COVID-19 infection, and 5.1% had been hospitalized. Danger signals for burnout were identified in 25.4% (n=35) of the residents, and 28.3% (n=39) could be evaluated as in the state of burnout. Depression was determined at a mild level in 29.6% (n=41) of the residents had mild, and at a moderate level in 29.6% (n=41).
Conclusions: These results demonstrate a significant impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on orthopaedic resident education in Turkey. Consequently, innovative strategies are necessary to minimize the damage to orthopaedic resident training during the present pandemic conditions and possible future effects.

Key words: COVID-19, Orthopaedic, Resident, Residency training, Education, Burnout, Depression.
